Motorized Outdoor Shades in Wisconsin: Bug Screens and Clear Vinyl

Wisconsin summers are short, and spring and fall evenings on the porch can turn cold and windy fast. Motorized outdoor shades from Evolved Habitat help you use your porch more of the year. At the touch of a button, a screen lowers to keep bugs out or to close the space in with clear vinyl, then rolls up out of sight when you want the open air back.

We install Progressive MagnaTrack motorized screens across Wisconsin, from Green Bay and the Fox Valley to lake homes in Door County.

MagnaTrack comes in two kinds of screen. Bug screens keep mosquitoes, gnats and flies off a covered porch, patio or pergola while the breeze still comes through. Clear vinyl screens close the space in, so you can sit outside on cool, breezy days and still see the view.

A Magnetic Track, Not a Zipper

Many retractable screens hold their edges in a zipper track. MagnaTrack uses a magnetic, free-floating side track instead, so there's no zipper running along the edges of your screen.

Works With Your Smart Home

Every MagnaTrack screen is motorized and works with most smart home systems, including Lutron. Your porch screens can be part of the same system as your lights and indoor shades. More on our Lutron work.

Bug Screen or Clear Vinyl

Choose bug screens for summer nights, or clear vinyl to keep the patio warmer and cleaner in spring and fall. We'll help you pick what fits the way you use your porch.

Motorized Porch Screens for Lake Homes and Door County

Made for Lake and Vacation Homes

Living near Green Bay, Lake Michigan or an inland lake means great views, and plenty of mosquitoes, gnats and midges. Motorized porch screens are one of our most-asked-for projects at lake and vacation homes in Baileys Harbor, Sister Bay, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Egg Harbor and Sturgeon Bay.

Recently we installed motorized screens on a covered porch and patio at a home near Baileys Harbor, with side tracks built into the posts so the screens disappear when raised.

Clear Vinyl Screens: A Retractable Vinyl Patio Enclosure

Clear vinyl screens turn an open porch into a retractable vinyl patio enclosure. Lower them on a cool spring evening or a windy fall afternoon, and the patio stays warmer and cleaner while you still see the yard or the lake.

That makes the space livable longer. In Wisconsin, vinyl screens stretch the porch season into spring and fall, so you're not closing up the porch the first chilly week of September. When the weather turns nice, raise the vinyl and the porch is open again.

Motorized Bug Screens for Summer Evenings

Motorized bug screens keep mosquitoes, gnats and flies off a covered porch, patio or pergola, while you keep the breeze and the view.

  • Magnetic side track: MagnaTrack holds the screen edges in a magnetic, free-floating track instead of a zipper track.
  • Motorized: lower or raise the screen at the touch of a button.
  • Smart home ready: works with most smart home systems, including Lutron.

Not sure whether you need bug screens or clear vinyl? We'll walk you through both and help you choose.

How MagnaTrack Motorized Screens Work

Each screen rolls up out of sight at the top of the opening. Press a button and it lowers between magnetic side tracks, one on each side, with no zipper along the edges. Press it again and the screen rolls back up, leaving the porch open.

Tip: lower bug screens in the late afternoon, before the bugs show up, so you do not trap any inside. Screens work best on porches and pergolas with a solid roof.

Bug Screens vs. Clear Vinyl: Which Is Right for Your Porch?

Bug screens are best when you want fresh air: warm summer evenings, lake breezes and an open view, with the mosquitoes kept out.

Clear vinyl is best when you want shelter: cool mornings, windy afternoons and the spring and fall shoulder seasons. Vinyl screens keep the patio warmer and cleaner, so you can use the space longer each year.

Planning Your Porch Screens

When we visit, we'll talk through:

  • How you use the porch, and in which seasons
  • Whether bugs or cold wind is the bigger problem
  • Bug screens, clear vinyl, or a mix for different openings
  • How you want to control the screens: a button, your phone or your Lutron system

An Outdoor Room You Can Open or Close

Motorized porch screens give you an outdoor room you can open or close whenever you like. Leave the screens up for open air, lower bug screens for a summer dinner, or close in with clear vinyl when the wind picks up off the lake.

We plan porch screens together with your indoor motorized shades and the rest of your smart home, so it all works together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between bug screens and vinyl screens?

Bug screens are a mesh that keeps mosquitoes, gnats and flies out while the breeze comes through. Clear vinyl screens close the porch in: they block the wind and hold in warmth while you still see out. Bug screens are made for summer nights; vinyl is made for cool spring and fall days.

Do vinyl patio screens keep the porch warmer?

Yes. Clear vinyl screens keep the patio warmer and cleaner, so the space stays livable longer. In Wisconsin, that stretches the porch season into spring and fall.

Do motorized porch screens keep mosquitoes out?

Yes. Lowered bug screens keep mosquitoes, gnats and flies off a covered porch or patio. For best results, lower them before the bugs come out in the evening. Screens work best on porches and pergolas with a solid roof.

How is MagnaTrack different from a zipper-track screen?

MagnaTrack holds the edges of the screen in a magnetic, free-floating side track instead of a zipper track. The screen is motorized, so it raises and lowers at the touch of a button.

Do motorized porch screens work with Lutron?

Yes. MagnaTrack screens work with most smart home systems, including Lutron. As a Lutron Black Diamond dealer, we can connect them to Lutron HomeWorks or RadioRA 3 so they run with your lights and shades.

Do you install motorized porch screens in Door County?

Yes. We install motorized outdoor shades and porch screens in Green Bay, the Fox Valley and across Door County, including Baileys Harbor, Sister Bay, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Egg Harbor and Sturgeon Bay.
